DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton described the disorder as “disgraceful scenes”.
“PSNI and members of the public being put in danger by unrepresentative thugs intent on destroying communities,” he wrote on Twitter.
A Police Federation Northern Ireland spokesperson said that there was “absolutely no excuse” for attacking the PSNI.
“They are protecting that community and aren’t there for the good of their health,” the spokesperson said on Twitter.
“Such behaviour should be roundly condemned.”
