a dead 5 year old kid found due to flash floods in Sentani District

The joint team continued to find victims of banjir bandang disasters in Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Papua. Until Monday (3/18/2019) morning, the total body that had been found reached 70 people.

Kapendam XVII Thank you Colonel Inf. Muhammad Aidi said, the joint team continued to comb the locations affected by the disaster.

“Until now, 70 people have died due to flash floods,” he said when contacted by Kompas.com on Monday morning.

Earlier on Monday morning, one of the victims was found by a member of the Sentani Koramil, Sertu Moses while carrying out sweeping in the direction of the BTN Jln Sosial in Sentani by following the river segment.

From the sweeping, at 07.00 WIT, Sertu Moses saw a figure of an adult on the banks of the Kemiri River in a part of his body buried in a flood avalanche material.

The findings were immediately reported to the Danramil and then forwarded to the post to get evacuation assistance.

At present, the evacuation team is carrying out the appointment process. The body cannot be identified because it is in a damaged condition.

At another location, at 7:20 a.m., a resident named Agus (45) saw a corpse in the rubbish pile in front of the Kali Yahim Estuary.

The Search and Rescue SAR Team of the Papua Regional Police received a report to the location of the discovery of the corpse using Longboat and RIB.

After arriving, the officer and the community removed the body of a child who was estimated to be 5 years old and took him to the Lake Sentani Unit Headquarters.

Meanwhile, on Sunday (3/17/2019) night, the DVI Team of the Papua Regional Police have succeeded in identifying 22 bodies and surrendering them to the family.

As a result of the disasters that affected four sub-districts in Sentani, 4,273 people were displaced in four existing evacuation posts. Until now, most of the refugees were at the Jayapura Regent’s Office. (*)
